Stravinsky - Le Sacre du printemps
The Rite of Spring. Imagine, if you can, being a turn of the century Parisian going to attend the premiere of a new Russian ballet. You haven’t heard the name Stravinsky before, but you know about Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, and Glazunov’s Les Sylphides, their lush orchestral backdrops to flowing beautiful dancing. You sit down, and the orchestra plays…strange melodies in strange harmonies, overlapping each other like a cacophony of wild birds. And the dancing is rough, angular, ugly. This is the mindset I get into when I think of Stravinsky’s notorious ballet, how it had caused a literal riot at the premiere. Though it may have had less to do with Stravinsky’s music and more to do with Nijinsky’s provocative choreography, with its twisted movements and sexual suggestions. About a year after the premiere, it was played as a concert piece and was well received. It has since been considered one of the best and most important scores of 20th century music. The story of the ballet follows a tribe of pre-Russian pagans, who celebrate the coming of spring, and begin the ritual of sacrificing a young virgin girl to the sun god. Subject matter-wise, this work is an example of primitivism in art. Musically, the work heavily emphases the winds, and is full of experimental ideas. The opening movement is a crescendo, but instead of the instruments getting louder, all instruments play the same volume but are introduced one after another to create the sense of build up. The rhythms are complicated, asymmetric, and counter-intuitive for dancing. I remember reading that Wagner had called Beethoven’s 7th symphony the “apotheosis of dance”, and I’m going to steal that quote and say this ballet is the true apotheosis of dance. It grabs me at a visceral level, and no the harmonies and melodies aren’t conventional and traditionally “pretty”, but the emphasized rhythm speaks to my primal instincts, this is music for the Id [if the Id existed].

I’d like to point out that actual studies have linked trans suicides to constant misgendering as a cause (one of, I should add), whereas affirmation of gender is known to do the opposite. So intentionally misgendering trans people is pretty much legit trying to kill them.

Sounds super legit though. Being misgendered almost always causes some dissociation and social withdrawal form me since it belittles my identity. I don’t get suicidal thoughts but I could sure as hell see how someone who does would be affected by that.Hiya!

Misgendering a trans person is a violent act. It’s an emotional abuse that cuts deep into who we feel we are at our core. We have enough to deal with internally, adding external voices to that can destroy us.
